On Monday, America watched as former Trump campaign adviser Sam Nunberg made the rounds on television news, dropping bombs about the Trump administration and sputtering a defiant ‘f*ck you’ to Robert Mueller’s special counsel, insisting he had no intention of complying with the subpoena that Mueller issued that same day.
It turns out there may be a very simple explanation: Nunberg may have been day drinking.
In a special report from The Daily Beast, several of Nunberg’s friends are quoted as being “concerned that he was putting himself in severe legal jeopardy by going on multiple live cable-news programs Monday afternoon.” The sources seemed to all be of the opinion that Nunberg had been drunk when he dialed in first to MSNBC, then CNN.
Monday morning, Nunberg apparently began calling his friends to let them know that he was planning to defy Robert Mueller and face potential contempt and obstruction of justice charges. Three of those friends came away from their conversations with him in fear that he was “drinking again,” indicating that they knew he’d had a problem with alcohol in the past. His friends thought that perhaps Sam was about to spiral out of control — but they had no way of knowing that he would do it all on live television.
One friend, in fact, claims that he told Sam “not to do anything stupid” and counseled him to go to his parents’ house right away. Moments after they spoke, Nunberg was on the phone with MSNBC.
Of course, there’s also the very distinct possibility that this whole “he was drunk” angle could be cooked up by Trump allies looking for some way to explain away the fact that a former campaign insider like Sam Nunberg publicly told MSNBC’s Katy Tur that he thought Mueller might have some evidence against Donald Trump regarding the Russia investigation:
“Do you think that they have something on the president?”
“I think they may. I think that he may have done something during the election.”
Not only that, but Nunberg said on CNN that Donald Trump himself knew all about the now-infamous Trump Tower meeting with Kremlin lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, saying “He was talking about it a week before…I don’t know why he went around trying to hide it.”
I’ll let you decide for yourself whether or not you think Nunberg was drunk — I’m leaning toward absolutely wasted. I wish that I could just cull a little clip for you from the following interview as an exemplar, but honestly, the whole thing is pretty wild. You can watch a little or a lot, and I don’t think you’ll stop being entertained:
